Eyebrow Threading: Is It Right For You?

Do you cringe at the thought of getting your eyebrows waxed? Maybe it's time for you to try something new. Eyebrow threading is a technique that has been around for centuries in Asia; and it's gentler on the skin compared to other hair removal treatments. If you're thinking of changing up your brow care routine, here's everything you need to know.

What Is Eyebrow Threading?

If a technique has been around for centuries, it must be effective, right? Eyebrow threading involves a twisted thread that glides over the brows, pulling out any unwanted hairs. The hair is removed from the follicle, with the aim of maintaining or developing the brow's shape. It's a simple technique that takes anywhere from 10–20 minutes, depending on the condition of your brows.

While it's similar to waxing in that it removes unwanted hairs, it's gentler on the skin and may cause less irritation.

How Often Do I Need It and How Much Does It Cost?

Threaded brows will look great for about 2–4 weeks, at which point you'll need to book your next session. However, your hair might grow back finer and much sparser after a few sessions, allowing you to stretch the time in between your appointments.

Threading is similar to waxing in the amount of time it takes, so that's reflected in the price. Expect to pay anywhere from $15–$35 depending on your salon and location.

The Benefits of Threading

As stated above, threading is gentle — and it doesn't pull or tug on the skin. If you have sensitive skin or you're using retinoids to treat acne, this may be your best option for hair removal. You won't be as irritated since threading only pulls at the unwanted hair, not the skin around it.

Another benefit is that it's all-natural. There are no artificial waxes or chemical-laden compounds, just a simple cotton thread. If you treat your body right by eating healthy and exercising, why not carry that over to your beauty routines? Threading can give you the results you desire without using any harmful chemicals.

This technique also allows for more control over the tiniest of hairs, which makes brow shaping more precise. There won't be any peach fuzz or tiny hairs left behind, resulting in clean and well-defined arches.

The only time threading may not be recommended is if you've just had a cosmetic procedure done. Whether surgical or in-office, it would be best to check with your doctor regarding recovery time and allowable beauty maintenance. It's also important to let your brow technician know of any procedures you’ve had recently. This way, they can advise you on the safety guidelines you'll need to follow.

OK, It's Gentle, But It Still Hurts, Right?

While it's thought of as a gentle procedure, threading can still be uncomfortable considering that you’re ripping hairs from their follicles. The process won't make you scream and cry, but it can leave you with a stinging sensation and some redness. You can soothe your skin by applying a bit of cooling aloe vera.

Don't worry: it won't be near the same irritation as waxing, so that's the upside. If you've gotten your eyebrows waxed and lived to tell about it, threading will be a piece of cake!

Any Maintenance Requirements?

Threading requires very little maintenance other than scheduled appointments every few weeks. If you find yourself with a stray hair here or there, you can always tweeze it to keep your brow line clean and in shape. Other than that, there's really nothing else you need to do. Just enjoy your luscious, well-defined brows.
