Losing the hair on your head is a natural occurrence, and it usually grows back. But what about eyebrow hair? Like most of the hair on your body, your eyebrows will also grow back over time. Whether you lose some hair due to a waxing session or a health-related reason, your arches will eventually return. Here's what you need to know about eyebrow growth.
The Time It Takes to Grow
Unless there's an underlying medical condition preventing the hair from growing back, you should see them return at a normal rate. However, it may take some time for them to do so. On average, it takes eyebrows around
four to six months
to grow back. The duration depends on different factors such as genetics, age, and diet, among others. And just like the hair on other parts of your body, your eyebrows follow a growth cycle that has three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
Anagen
The
anagen phase, also known as the active phase, is when cells divide quickly in the roots. New hair is formed, pushing the older hair that has left the anagen phase up the follicle. Some people may have a short active phase and can find it difficult to grow their hair to a particular length. Longer hair usually means that you have a longer active phase of growth. Eyebrows, in particular, tend to have a short anagen phase that lasts between 30 and 45 days.
Catagen
The next phase of the growth cycle is the catagen phase. The catagen is considered the transitional stage. Around 3% of hair is in this phase at any given time. Hair will stop growing, and the outer root sheath will attach to the hair root. The structure formed during this stage is called the club hair. The catagen phase lasts for two to three weeks.
Telogen
Also known as the resting phase, telogen covers around 6–8% of all hair. At this stage, the club hair is fully formed, and the follicles are at rest. Hair in the telogen phase will often shed to make room for new ones, with at least 25 hairs being shed each day. For scalp hair, the duration of the telogen phase is around 100 days, but it lasts longer for eyebrow hair.
How to Help Your Eyebrows Grow Faster
The amount of time it takes for hair to grow is different for each individual. Your hormones, age, genetics, and overall health can all affect how fast your eyebrows take to grow back. Fortunately, there are many ways you can help speed up your brows' growth process.
A Healthy Diet
One of the first things you can do to speed up eyebrow growth is maintaining a healthy diet. Since hair is made up of a protein called keratin, it's important to get include protein-rich foods in your diet. Aside from protein, some vitamins can also impact hair growth, and these vitamins are:
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin D
- B vitamins
One more thing you should be wary of is iron deficiency anemia. This type of anemia can lead to hair loss, not just on your scalp but your brows as well. Make sure to consume foods that are high in iron, such as spinach and certain cereals, to speed up the growth process.
Do Not Pluck or Wax
Remember not to pluck or wax your eyebrows while they are growing back. It's
important to allow the hair to grow back fully before you start styling them.
